the answer is that he heard two sounds because of echo produced by sound of striking hammer.. means when hammer strikes, first sound is of striking hammer really and other is of its echo.....

on keeping ear near to the railway track on striking a hammer on it, two sounds are heard. The first sound heard is the sound wave travelled by through the railway track as sound travels faster in solids. The second sound heard is the sound wave travelled through air.
