As a piece of chalk is non-metal, it shatters but according to definition, a metal is en element which has a tendency to lose Electrons and ,when compressed, not shatter but become a thin sheet. As Iron fits this description, Iron is a Metal and Metals dont shatter but become thin sheets.
Hope it Helps
