the particles of matter have force acting between them. this force keeps the particles together. the magnitude of this force is lesser in chalk, hence it could be easily broken down into pieces on hammering. whearas, the magnitude of this intermolecular force is more in iron, hence it cannot be broken into small pieces on hammering
