the particles of matter have force acting between them. this force keeps the particles together. the magnitude of this force is lesser in chalk, hence it could be easily broken down into pieces on hammering. whearas, the magnitude of this intermolecular force is more in iron, hence it cannot be broken into small pieces on hammering

the particles of chalk are delicately packed whereas in case of iron bar, the particles are strongly packed. As iron is hard, and due to very little intermolecular space between them, iron is not broken down into small pieces but particles of chalk are not so tightly packed and hence, they break easily.
