a piece of chalk can be broken down into small pieces when hammered but it is not possible to do so in case of an iron bar because it is a property of iron to be hard and not be distorted easily whereas chalk has looser particles compared to iron bar

IT IS SO BECAUSE THE INTERMOLECULAR SPACE BETWEEN THE MOLECULES OF CHALK ARE FAR AWAY FROM EACH OTHER AS COMPARED TO THE MOLECULES OF IRON BAR.
