a piece of chalk can be broken into small particles by hammering but a piece of iron cannot be broken into small pieces why

Because its molecules are very tightly packed and hence it becomes difficult to break it into pieces

iron is a solid substance and the atoms are packed tightly but chalk is also a solid substance but here the atoms are not packed so tightly
