heya!! this is property of brittleness. non metals that is chalk is brittle and can be easily broken into peicrs . whereas, metals are not brittle.

This show that the chalk is brittle & very soft so it break on hammering.
And, Iron is not brittle and it is very hard so it not break on hammering.

the atoms of iron are very attractive to each other and due to this solidarty property a piece of iron cannot be broken into smaller ones by hammering
