A piece of chalk can be broken into small particles on hammering, but it is not possible to break a piece of iron in the same fashion. why?

Its because the atoms of chalk are not so tightly bound as the atoms of iron piece of identical size so it is difficult to break a piece of iron while easy to break a chalk.
