a piece of cloth cost rupees 400. If the piece of cloth were 4 metre longer and the cost of each metre were Rs.2 less the cost could have remain unchanged. How long is the peace and what is the original cost​

let the length of the cloth be x and cost of cloth per m be y then,

x * y = 400

so, y =400/x ....(1)

now, If the piece were 4m longer, and each metre of cloth costed Rs 2 less, then,

(x+4)(y -2) = 400

xy -2x + 4y -8 = 400

putting the value of (1), we get,

x*400/x-2x+4*400/x-8=400

=400-2x+1600/x-8=400

=400+8=400-2x+1600/x

408=400-2x+1600/x

=408-400=2x+1600/x

=8x=2x^2+1600

4x= x^2+800

or

800+x^2=4x

x^2-4x-800=0

factor these number you will get x and (y=400/x)
