When a piece of ice is added to water in a cup the entropy will increase.

  • Entropy is measured as the randomness or disorder of the system
  • When randomness in a system is greater than its entropy will also increase
  • Entropy is directly proportional to the randomness of the system
  • When water freezes to form ice then the entropy decreases because randomness in the solid particles is less than in liquid and air
  • Therefore similarly when ice is kept in a cup of water then it will start melting soon then the randomness of the particle will increase and Hence entropy will also increase.
