A piece of magnesium and a piece of charcoal is put in two separate beakers. To each
beaker 5 mL of hydrochloric acid is added. A lit matchstick was brought close to the
mouth of the beakers.

The burning matchstick extinguishes with a pop sound when placed over the beaker with
magnesium and acid but not when placed over the beaker with charcoal and acid.
What comparison can be drawn between magnesium and charcoal ?

Magnesium and zinc metal strip, when immersed in HCl, would leave the least amount of zinc ions.

Magnesium is more reactive than zinc, so magnesium reacts with hydrochloric acid while zinc remains as it is. Zinc is more reactive than lead, iron and silver so, zinc reacts with hydrochloric acid to form Zn
