ANSWER :

Shorter piece is 2m 70 cm and the longer piece is 4m 50cm

EXPLANATION :

Let x - 1.8 m be the shorter piece then x be the longer piece

x + x - 1.8 = 7.2

2x = 9

x = 4.5 m = 4 m 50 cm

x - 1.8 = 4.5 - 1.8 = 2.7m = 2 m 70 cm

Shorter piece is 2m 70cm

\bf\underline{Given:}

  • A piece of rope is 7m20cm= 720 cm long
  • Cut into 2 pieces

\bf\underline{Solution:}

Let longer piece be x.

Shorter piece = x-1m 80cm=> x - 180cm

x + x - 180cm = 720

=> 2x - 180 cm = 720

=> 2x = 720+180

=> 2x = 900

=> x = \frac{900}{2}

=> x = 450 cm

\\

x - 180cm= 450-180

=> 270 cm

=> 2m\:70 cm Ans.
