Na (s) + H2O (l) ==> NaOH (aq) + H2 (g)

When sodium metal reacts with water, the reaction is so exothermic that the hydrogen evolved immediately catches fire. Caustic soda or Sodium hydroxide ( which is an Alkali ) is formed during this reaction.
