Let the common ratio be x.

So the two pieces of the string will be :

Larger Piece = 5x

Shorter Piece = 3x

According To Question

Shorter Piece = 81 cm

3x = 81

X = 27

Length of the string before it had been cut

= Larger Piece + Smaller Piece

= 5x + 3x

= 8x

= 8 (27)

= 216 cm
