a piece of wood left under water, comes to surface. why?

a metal solid cylinder tied to a thread is hanging from the hook of spring balance. the cylinder is gradualy emerged into water contained in a jar. what changes is expected in readings of spring balance? explain.

Water is acting as a upward force on the the wood.

Density of the water is more than wood.

Conclusion:-

Density of wood is less than the density of water. That is why it floats on the surface of water and if immersed, the upthrust acting on the wooden piece will be greater than its weight pulling it downwards, so it comes to the surface
