Let, the volume of wood be v and  volume of wood in inside=′a′

Density of wood =ρ₁ =0.36 [Relative density = density]

Density of oil =ρ₂=0.9

From Buoyancy principle,

Buoyant force =aρ₂g (weight of liquid displace)

weight of wood =vρ₁g

in equilibrium

aρ₂g=vρ₁g

⇒ a=vρ₁÷ρ₂

⇒ a=(0.36÷0.9)v= 0.04v

∴  volume of wood outside oil

v′ =v−a = v− 0.04v

⇒ v′= 0.96v

 ⇒ v'÷v= 0.96

Fraction of volume of wood above oil is 0.96.
