Explanation:

Given A piece of wood weighs 74 g in air. A lead sinker which weighs 32 g in water is attached to the wood to sink it in water. If the total weight of the wood and the sinker in water is 13.5 g, find the relative density of the wood.

  • So we have (Density of lead – density of water) V lead = 32 g
  •   Volume of lead = 32 / ρ lead – ρ water
  •    So  ρ wood x Vol wood = 74 g
  •      So Vol wood = 74 / ρ wood
  • So ρ lead 32 / ρ lead – ρ water + ρ wood 74 / ρ wood – ρ water x 32 / ρ lead – ρ water + 74 / ρ lead = 13.5
  •           32 – 74 (ρ water / ρ wood – 1) = 13.5
  •                 74(ρ water / ρ lead – 1) = 18.5
  •                     ρ water / ρ lead – 1 = 18.5 / 74
  •                      ρ water / ρ lead = 1 + 185 / 740
  •                                                = 1 + 37 / 148
  •                                               =  185 / 148
  •                                              = 1.25
