Now,in triangle ABC

tan60°=AB÷BC

root (3)=1200÷y

y=1200÷root (3)

In triangle ABD

tan45°=AB÷BD

1=1200÷x+y

x+y=1200

x=1200-y

(we have y=400×root (3))

x=1200-400×root (3)

(we know that root (3)=1.73)

x=1200-400×1.73

x=1200-692

x=508 metres

Therefore, the distance between ships is 508 metres
