A pipe can fill a tank in 4 hours, while a leak which is at one-fourth the height of the tank can empty upto that part in 2 hours. If both are operated simultaneously and initially the tank is full, then when will it be one-fourth full

Answer:

for one part of tank take time to full is 4hours

then for 1/2part of tank take time to full is 3hours

then for 1/3part of tank take time to full is 2hours

then for 1/4part of tank take time to full is 1hour

Step-by-step explanation:

The pipe(P) takes 4 hours to fill the tank

Lets assume capacity of tank as 40L, that means rate of P is 10/hour

Now, The leak is at 1/4th the height of tank, and it can empty 1/4th of volume, i.e. 10L in 2 hours =>which means rate of leak(L) is -5/hour

Combined rate of pipe and leak is 5/hour

Now, initially the tank is full, i.e. at 40L

It has to come down to 1/4th capacity, i.e. 10L

Therefore to empty 30L at the combined rate of 5/hour would be 30/5=6hours
