A pipe of diameter 2.4cm discharges water at a rate of 2.8 m/s. Find the volume of water discharged in half an hour, giving your answer in litres. The answer is 2280. Please explain.

The diameter of the pipe is 2.4cm=0.024m.

Therefore radius of the pipe=0.012m

Therefore surface area of the opening of pipe or crossectional area of the pipe=\pi (0.012)^{2}

Speed of water discharge=2.8m/s.

Volume of water discharge per second=\pi (0.012)^{2}×2.8 =0.001266meter cube.

Now half hour=30 minutes=30×60 seconds=1800seconds.

Volume of water discharged in 1800 seconds =  0.001266×1800  = 2.28     meter cube.

Now we know that 1meter cube =1000lit.

Therefore 2.28meter cube=2.28× 1000litres = 2280 litres.
