 a pitiable figure a century behind his time in this context means that  after ali the old coachman's daughter had married and went away with a soldier from the punjab regiment, for 25 years , he had not recieved a single letter from his beloved daughter about how or where she was. and all of his remaining life he had spent with a little hope and lot of patience that one day his miriam's letter would certainly arrive . so everyday he would go o the post office to see if any letter had arrived from his miriam. but nobody in the post office would understand his feelings as father and would make fun of him
