If an airplane moving horizontally dropped a box, what is the path of motion for the observer on the plane and the observer in the ground?
The motion of the box can be split into two components; the vertical and the horizontal velocity.
The horizontal velocity is easy. It will remain the same as the initial velocity of the plane. The vertical velocity is different. Since the box is accelerating towards the ground, the vertical velocity must be increasing. On earth, neglecting air resistance, the box will increase in velocity by 9.8m/s each second.
