Limestone should be added to soil for plant growth. It is alkaline in nature.

  • Plant requires pH 7.2 for its growth, which states plant requires neutral pH conditions. The given pH of soil is 5.6, which is acidic.
  • To neutralise the acidic nature of soil, alkaline compound namely limestone or calcium carbonate is added.
  • The process of neutralisation occurs as acids react with calcium carbonate to release water, carbon dioxide and calcium salts.
