A plant with variegated ( two coloured ) leaves was left in sunlight for several hours. Pieces of one of the leaves were then ( detached ) removed and tested for starch. The diagram below shows the results


Explain as Fully you can why the yellow region of the leaf had not produce starch

  • When a plant is destarched using alcohol and water, it decolourises .
  • The leaf has two types of patches-bluish black and yellow, the Bluish black area contains starch and yellow area without starch.
  • Bluish black areas are the ones which were green previously while non green areas remain pale coloured.
  • This shows that only chlorophyll containing areas (green parts of the leaf) produce starch which is a product of photosynthesis.
