Given : A player hits a ball towards a net of height 5 m with a speed of 20 m/s. The ball just rises up to the top of the net and falls inside it.

(Take g = 10 m/s2)

To Find : the horizontal distance this ball would have travelled had there been no net in its way.

Solution:

speed of 20 m/s

angle = α

Vertical speed = 20sinα

just rises up to the top of the net

=> Vertical speed = 0

=> t = 20sinα/g

V² - U²  = 2aS

=>  (20sinα)² = 2 g(5)

=> sin²α = g/40

g = 10

=>  sin²α = 1/4

=>  sin α = 1/2

=> α = 30°

t = 20sinα/g = 20 (1/2)/10  =  1 sec

Horizontal Speed = 20cosα = 20(√3/2) =10√3

Horizontal distance  = 2 * 10√3   * 1  = 20√3
