Given;-

          Masses, = m & x(let)

Position in x ( of m ) = (a, 0)

Position in x ( of x ) = (-3a, 0)

Then, we know that;-

∵     Xcm  = x₁m₁ + x₂m₂ / m₁ + m₂

Note; Xcm represents the centre of mass in x.

             0  = m (a) + x( -3a ) / m + x

             0  = ma - 3xa

           ma = 3xa

             m = 3x

              x = m/3

Hence, mass of m/3 should be kept at (-3a , 0) so that the centre of mass lies at the origin.
