  1. draw a tangent from p to circle
  2. join point p and center of the circle
  3. join center and the point at which tangent touches the circle
  4. since tangent always makes angle=90° with respect to the radius joined to it the triangle is a right triangle
  5. use Pythagoras theorem to find the length of the other side which is the length of the tangent
