A pole 81 m in height broke but did not separate. It is broken at a height of 36 m. At what distance its top touched the ground from its base?

Answer:

Suppose the point from which the pole broke is x meters above the ground. then the length of AC will be (81 - x)m.

ABC is right angled triangle by applying Pythagoras theorem.

AC2 = AB2 + BC2

= (81 - x)2 = x2 + 27 2

= 6561+ x2 - 162x = x2 + 729

= 5832 = 162x

= x = 36

Height from which the pole broke is 36 meters above the ground.
