The ratio of speed of policeman and thief is 12 : 5

Given :

  • A policeman startes to chase a thief.

  • When the thief goes 5 steps, the policeman moves 6 steps.

  • Again, 3 steps of the policeman is equal to 6 steps of the thief

To find :

The ratio of speed of policeman and thief is

(A) 11 : 13

(B) 1 : 2

(C) 7 : 9

(D) 12 : 5

Solution :

:Step 1 of 2 :

Write down the given data

Let step length of police men = P and step length of thief = T

Since 3 steps of the policeman is equal to 6 steps of the thief

∴ 3P = 6T

⇒ P = 2T

Step 2 of 2 :

Find the ratio of speed of policeman and thief

Since the thief goes 5 steps, the policeman moves 6 steps

Hence the required ratio of speed of policeman and thief

= 6P : 5T

= ( 6 × 2T ) : 5T

= 12T : 5T

= 12 : 5

Hence the correct option is (D) 12 : 5
