let the number be x

and let the second number be 5x

if 21 is added to both, x+21, 5x+21

then 5x + 21 = 2 (x+ 21)

5x + 21 = 2x + 42

5x -2x +21 = 42

5x-2x= 42-21

3x = 21

x=  21/3

x= 7

5x= 7 x 5 = 35

therefore the original numbers are 7 and 35
