let x and x+4 be the numbers

x^2+(x+4)^2=32

x^2+x^2+8x+16=32

2x^2+8x+16-32=0

2x^2+8x-16=0

x^2+4x-8=0

use [-b±√(b^2-4ac)]/2a

[-4±√(16+32)]/2

[-4±√48]/2

[-4±4√3]/2

-2±2√3

x=-2+2√3 and x=-2-2√3

you can't use -2-2√3 because it is negative

x+4=4-2+2√3=2+2√3

-2+2√3 and 2+2√3 is the solution (-2+2√3 is 4 less than 2+2√3 and -2+2√3 is positive)
