Refractive Index

Refractive index is defined as the ratio of real depth to apparent depth.

It can  be represented as,

\mu=\frac{Real \ depth}{Apparent \ depth}

Where,μ is refractive index of liquid.

Real Depth: It is the actual depth at the bottom of the tank.

Apparent Depth: It is the virtual depth observed as a result of refraction of light. It depends on the refractive index of the medium.

According to information given in the question,

real depth = 10 \ cm

apparent depth = (10-2)=8 \ cm

So, refractive index (μ)= \frac{10}{8}=1.25

So, the refractive index of the liquid inside the pot is 1.25.
