A potato is cut into a number of small pieces. These pieces are placed on wet cotton kept in a tray. After a few days, green shoots and coots appear only from some potato pieces and not from all why?

I had it on my test for class XII.

The pieces of potato that bear nodes only can give rise to new plant by producing shoots and roots. But the pieces not bearing nodes cannot produce new plants. Thus from a whole potato only some pieces that bear nodes give rise to roots and shoots.

Answer:

The vegetative part of the potatoes is Nodes from where the roots and shoots arise. The part of potatoes having nodes will give rise to shoots and roots so the whole part of the plant will not develop into a plant.

The root and shoot of the plant can easily give rise to the whole plant. Potato tubers have eyes from where the new begins start.

The new grown stem is called as sprouts which is then converted into a complete plant.
