17th Century

1612: The Dutch arrived and captured  the region and established near Pulicat, just northern of the city.

1626: The British EIC decided to construct a factory on the East Coast and selected Armagon, a village north of Pulicat, as its site.

1637: Francis Day, a EIC officer, a member of the "Masulipatam Council" & the chief ("Armagon Factory"), made a "voyage of exploration" in the year 1637 down the coast upto Pondicherry to choose a site for  a "new settlement".

1639: The British secured a grant from the" Damarla Venkatadri Nayaka" of Kalahasti, for getting a 3-mile-long land strip & Madras city was founded and the foundation was laid for "Fort St. George".

1640: Francis Day & Andrew Cogan landed with 25 Europeans & Fort St. George was completed.

1646: Populace of the city was recorded as 19000

1664: 1st British hospital in the nation was started in Fort St.George which had become the "Government General Hospital".

1668: Triplicane was annexed to the city.

1669: Populace of the city rose up to 40000.

1678: Foundation was laid for St.Mary's Church in Fort St.George. Kalikambal Temple was built in its new location

1679: St.Mary's Church is completed.

1688: The "Madras City Municipal Corporation" was inaugurated.

1693: Purasawalkam, Tondiarpet, & Egmore  are annexed to the city

18th Century

1701: Aurangazeb's general "Daud Khan" attacked. Fort St. George. But, the British managed to hold the Fort.

1708: Five neighboring villages of Nungambakkam, Thiruvottiyur, Vyasarpadi, Sathangadu, &Kottivakkam are annexed to the city and wall was constructed around "Black Town".

1711: The 1st "printing press" is erected.

1715: The EIC acquired Tondiarpet.

1721: Cyclone strikes (13 and 14 November).

1726: "Coja Petrus Uscan" constructed the 134 stone steps at St.Thomas Mt; these steps are even used today to reach t 300-feet hillock

1735: Chintadripet was formed.

1742:  Periamet, Vepery, Pudupakkam, & Perambur were annexed to the city.

1744: Robert Clive worked  as a "writer" at "Fort St.George".

1746: The French Admiral "La Bourdonnais" captured Fort St.George.

1749: The French had returned Madras to the English by way of the "Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle". Mylapore&  Santhome were annexed to the city.

1758: "French Commander" Lawly sieged Madras.

1759: The French siege ended

1767: Hyder Ali invaded the city for the 1st time

1768: Chepauk Palace was built by "Nawab of Arcot".

1769: Hyder Ali invaded the city again.

1772: "General Hospital" at Fort St.George moved to its current location. "Seven Wells Scheme", the city's first organized water supply was started.

1777: "Veerappillai" is appointed as "first Kotthawal", that gave rise to "Kotthawal Chavadi".

1783: Fort St.George is repaired and attained the current shape.

1784: The 1st newspaper, "Madras Courier", was founded.

1785: The 1st post office started functioning.

1786: William Petrie, a Madras Govt  member, built a private "astronomical observatory", the 1st observatory in the East.

1788: Thomas Parry landed in Madras & started the oldest surviving "mercantile name" "Parrys" in the city

1792: Systematic weather observations begin, the Observatory of Madras and then the Regional Meteorological Center are established.

1794: The "Govt Survey School", the "oldest engineering college" & now part of the "Anna University", commenced at Fort St. George. The US. merchant William Abbott is the first US consular representative of the Madras presidency to mark the first consular presence in town

1795: Triplicane Wallajah Mosque was constructed

1798: The city area was divided into a 69 km2 zone around the Fort and included sixteen hamlets.
