The second law of thermodynamics states that the total entropy of the universe always increases for a spontaneous process. The net change in entropy of the system, ∆S , equals the sum of the entropy created during the spontaneous process and the change in energy associated with the heat flow.

The spontaneity of the process appears to be associated with a highly ordered system going to a less-ordered, uniform state. the ΔS of the surroundings increases enough because of the exothermicity of the reaction that it overcompensates for the negative ΔS of the system, and since the overall ΔS=ΔS surrounding −ΔS system the overall change in entropy is still positive.
