we are given that the company sold 426 houses in 2007,

So,

x+  \frac{20}{100} x=426</h3><h3> \\  \frac{120}{100} x = 426  \\ x =  \frac{426 \times 100}{120}  \\  = 355

Hence it sold 355 houses in 2006..
