A proton is moving with velocity 7x10 m/s towards right
and neutron (mass nearly equal to that of proton) is
moving with velocity 4x109 mis towards left. They col-
lide and a deuteron is formed. The deuteron will
move with a velocity

Explanation:

use conservation of momentum

mass of proton=m=mass of neutron

and deutron= 2m

u of proton= 7×10^6 (-î)

u of neutron= 4×10^6(î)

after collision both form deutron so we can take them as one system.

Now P initial= P final

m1u1+m2u2=(m1+m2)v

hence velocity of deutron= (m1u1+m2u2)÷(m1+m2)

=(4m×10^6 - 7m×10^6)÷2m

= 1.5×10^6(-î) m/s

so the newly formed deutron will move left with a velocity of 1.5×10^6 m/s..
