We know that, electric field intensity is;

  • E = F/q
  • Eq = F - - - - - - - (i)
  • { where E = electric field intensity, q = charge and F = Force }

Also, force is directly proportional to mass and accleration;

  • F = ma
  • Eq = ma - - - - - - - { from eq(i) }
  • Eq/m = a

From question we have, the proton is released from rest and thus;

  • Initial velocity(u) = 0

According to 2nd equation of motion:

  • S = ut + ½at² - - - - - - - { put s = d, acc. to ques)
  • d = 0t + ½ × Eq/m × t²
  • d = ½ × Eq/m × t²
  • 2d = Eq/m × t²
  • 2md/Eq = t²
  • √2md/Eq = t

Therefore, the total time taken will be √2md/Eq.
