Let the number of ₹5 coin be x nos.and the number of ₹2 coins be y nos.

There are 40 coins in a bag, consisting of Rs. 5 and Rs. 2 coins. Accordingly

x + y = 40

x = 40 - y….Eq..1

If the total amount is Rs. 140,

The value of ₹5 coins is 5x and the value if ₹2 coins is 2y

5x + 2y = 140….Eq..2

Substituting the value of x from Eq..1 to Eq..2

5 (40 - y) + 2y = 140

200 - 5y + 2y = 140

--5y + 2y = 140 - 200

--3y = —60

y = 60/3

y = 20

Thus the number if ₹2 coins are 20 nos.

Substituting the value of y in Eq..1 to derive value of x

x = 40 - y

x = 40 - 20

x = 20

There are 20 numbers ₹5 coins

Answer: there are 20 numbers ₹5 coins and 20 numbers ₹2 coins

Checking the correctness of answer by substituting the values of x and y in the Eq.. 2

5x + 2y = 140

5 × 20 + 2 × 20 = 140

100 + 40 = 140

140 = 140
