The number of two rupee coins in the purse is 28.

• Let the number of one rupee coins in the purse be x.

Let the number of two rupee coins in the purse be y.

• According to the question,

y = (1 / 3) of x

Or, y = (1 / 3) × x

Or, y = x / 3  -(i)

• Total amount in the purse = Rs. 115

=> x + y = 115

Or, x + x / 3 = 115  [ Putting y = x / 3, from (i) ]

Or, ( 3x + x ) / 3 = 115

Or, 4x / 3 = 115

Or, x = ( 115 × 3 ) / 4

• Putting x = ( 115 × 3 ) / 4 in equation (i), we get,

y = ( 115 × 3 ) / 4 × 3

Or, y = 115 / 4

Or, y = 28.75

• Since the number of coins cannot be in decimal, the number of 2 rupee coins = 28 .
