Solution :

V = 2 X 310/2 [when he moves 310m towards the cliff he hears the echo

 

                              after 3s. So  5 - 3 = 2s ]

V = 310m/s

Total distance from the cliff :

Case1:-

t = 5sec

Distance = 2d m

speed = v m/s

So, v = 2d/5

Again,

Case2 :-

t = 3sec

distance = (2d - 620) m

speed = v m/s

v = (2d - 620)/3

Equating both the cases as the speed comes out to be the same. We get,

2d/5 = (2d -620)/3

d = 775m

So, v = (2× 775)/5 (from case1)

v = 310 m/s.
