Question :

A radio news report broadcast from Tokyo (140°E) at 5 pm on Friday was received by a ship at 7 pm the same day. Find the longitude of the ship.

Answer :

Longitude of the ship is 170° E.

Given :

Longitude of Tokyo = 140° E

Time at Tokyo = 5pm on Friday

Time when the ship received the news report broadcast = 7pm on Friday

To find :

Longitude of the ship

Solution :

Since the ship received the news report broadcast at 7pm on Friday which is 2 hours later than that of Tokyo , hence we can conclude that the ship is towards the East of Tokyo.

Time difference = 7pm - 5pm = 2 hours

= 2 × 60 mins

= 120 mins

We know that ,

1° longitude makes a time difference of 4mins ,

Therefore 1min will make a time difference of 1/4 °

120 mins will make a time difference of 1/4 × 120 °

= 30°

Since the ship is towards the East of Tokyo , hence the longitude of the ship = ( 140+30 )° E

= 170° E

Longitude of the ship is 170° E.
