A railroad car of mass M is at rest on frictionless rails when a man of mass m starts moving on the car towards the engine. If the car recoils the speed v backwards on the rails, with what velocity is the man approaching the engine?

mass of car = M.
mass of man = m.
Initially velocity of car was, u1= 0 m/s.
Let man's velocity be u
 m/s.
The car acquires a speed of v m/s.
ACCORDING TO CONSERVATION OF LINEAR MOMENTUM :
mu + Mu1 = (m+M)V   {As the man is in the car having velocity v and                                            Net mass is (m+M) }
∴ mu = (m+M)v
or, u(initial velocity of man) = [(m+M)V]/u
or, v[1+M/m]
