Answer:

  • The first quantity is called the antecedent and the second is called the consequent of the ratio.
  • The two together are called the terms of the ratio.
  • Given Ratio = 9 : 8

Let the antecedent be 9x and consequent be 8x of the given ratio.

( I ) If its antecedent is 81 then find the consequent.

⇒ Antecedent = 81

⇒ 9x = 81

⇒ x = 81 ÷ 9

⇒ x = 9

Consequent of the ratio is :

⇒ Consequent = 8x

  • Putting the value of x

⇒ Consequent = 8 × 9

Consequent = 72

Hence, consequent of the ratio will be 72.

( II ) If its consequent is 40 then find the antecedent.

⇢ Consequent = 40

⇢ 8x = 40

⇢ x = 40 ÷ 8

⇢ x = 5

Antecedent of the ratio is :

⇢ Antecedent = 9x

  • Putting the value of x

⇢ Antecedent = 9 × 5

Antecedent = 45

Hence, antecedent of the ratio will be 45.
