At the point when the light enters from rarer medium to denser medium, its speed diminishes. The proportion of the speed of light in the two media represents its refractive index of the medium.

Suppose speed is represented by v in benzene

c/v = refractive index = 1 .5

where c is speed of light in vacuum = 3 x 10^8 m/s

As refractive index= speed of light in air/ speed of light in medium

Speed of light in medium v= 3 x 10^8/ 1.5= 2 x 10^8 m/s

Reduction in speed of light (final - initial) = 3 x 10^8- 2 x 10^8= 10^8

%age reduction = (10^8 /3 x 10^8 ) x 100

= 1 /3 x 100

= 33.33%
