When a ray of light diverges after reflection of refraction, the various rays emanating from the same point do not converge in real space. They all go farther away from each other. But they appear to come from a point. That point is obtained by extending the reflected path of the ray backwards.

So the image formed is a virtual image.

Real image is formed only when the rays converge after reflection or refraction.
