Given:

A ray of light incident to an unknown material makes an angle of incidence of 25˚.

To find:

What is the refractive index of the material if the angle of refraction is 17˚

Solution:

From given, we have,

A ray of light incident to an unknown material makes an angle of incidence of 25˚ and the angle of refraction is 17˚.

⇒ i = 25° and r = 17°

The formula that is used to find the value of the refractive index, given the values of the angle of incidence and angle of refraction, is as follows.

n₁ sin i = n₂ sin r

substitute the given values in the above equation.

(1 ) sin 25° = (n) sin (17°)

n = sin 25° / sin (17°)

n = 1.44

Therefore, the value of the refractive index is 1.44
