Given info : A ray of light travelling in air falls on the surface of a transparent slab. the ray makes an angle an angle of 45° with the normal to the surface. refractive index of the material of the slab is √2.
To find : The angle made by the refracted ray with the normal within the slab in degree.
solution : using Snell's law, μ₁sini = μ₂sinr
here first medium is air,
so, μ₁ = 1 and incident angle , i = 45°
now after refraction, the ray makes an angle r with the normal.
refractive index of slab, μ₂ = √2
so, 1 × sin45° = √2 × sinr
⇒1 × 1/√2 = √2 × sinr
⇒1/2 = sinr
⇒r = 30°
Therefore the angle made by the refracted ray with the normal within the slab is 30°.
