and several other friends of Antonio. The Duke decided to wait for sometime for Bellario.
Portia dressed herself and her maid, Nerissa, in men's apparel, and putting on the robes
of a councellor, she took Nerissa along with her as her clerk. The case was just going to
be heart when Portia entered and presented a letter from Bellario, in which he excused
his presence in the court to plead for Antonio and requested that learned Doctor Bathasar
(so he called Portia) might be permitted to plead his stead.
