The Indian space Research Organisation (ISRO), which was established in 1969, has its
headquarters in Bengaluru. Its vision is to “harness space technology for national
development while pursuing research and planetary exploration.’ It is developed while
pursuing space science research and planetary exploration’. It is managed by the
Department of space which reports to the prime Minister of India.
ISRO launched the Mars Orbiter Mission, also called Mangalyaan, on 5 November 2013. It
was India’s first interplanetary mission and after this launch, ISRO become the fourth
space agency to reach Mars, after the Soviet space program, NASA and the European space
agency. India is the first Asian nation to reach Mars orbit and also the first nation in the
world to do so in its first attempt.
The Mars Orbiter Mission was achieved on a budget of 450 crore rupees, nearly a tenth of
the amount that US space agency NASA Spent on sending the Maven spacecraft to Mars. It
is the world’s most economical space mission to Mars ever. The crucial objective of this
mission is to try to detect methane in the Martian air, which could be an indicator of
biological activity at the surface. It has been put in orbit around Mars as a study for future
spacecraft and mission designs. Most importantly, it put India on the world space map and
is considered the crowning glory of ISRO.
